Voodoo Is Real! Iyabo Ojo Backs Nollywood Storylines

Iyabo Ojo has responded to criticism surrounding Nollywood’s frequent use of spiritual themes and dramatic visual effects, saying the industry is simply staying true to African culture and storytelling.

During a discussion with British-Nigerian broadcaster, Remi Burgz, the movie star said many people judge Nollywood without understanding that African stories are heavily influenced by local traditions, beliefs, and folklore.

She explained that supernatural elements often seen in Nigerian movies are inspired by realities and experiences familiar to many Africans, adding that filmmakers should not be expected to completely abandon those themes in an attempt to imitate Western cinema.

“Well, it’s Africa, and we have to tell our story the way it is, no matter how much we want to westernize it or modernize it. There are voodoos in Africa, and they work,” she stated.

Ojo also suggested that Nollywood’s style of storytelling is part of what makes the industry unique, noting that imagination and cultural expression play a major role in how stories are presented.

She added that while some viewers may laugh at certain effects used in movies, the industry continues to evolve while proudly showcasing African narratives and traditions to audiences around the world.
