Uruguay made it six wins out of six at home to boost their hopes of automatic qualification for the 2018 World Cup thanks to first-half strikes from Sebastian Coates and Diego Rolan.
Former Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates, currently on loan at Portuguese side Sporting CP from Sunderland, grabbed his first senior international goal to put the home side ahead in the 12th minute.
Felipe Caicedo equalised in the 45th minute after a swift counter-attack but seconds later Diego Rolan restored Uruguay’s lead by turning in Carlos Sanchez’s fierce drive from close range.
Uruguay take on Chile on Tuesday when Colombia visit Argentina in the race for places in the finals in Russia.
